• The Colorado Riparian Association sees the value of habitat assessments county-wide in
selected areas,
• The Boulder County Audobon Society could use some help in assessing riparian habitat
and bird species on their east Boulder Creels and Valmont Reservoir bird observation
areas and,
• The Boulder County PACE program would like to utilize volunteers as observers by
assessing the waste disposal and containment practices of restaurants, service stations,
medical facilities, constn~ction sites and other businesses.
5. Future Steps and Potential Activities
Through this stakeholder outreach process, BCWI has now created the Boulder Creels
Community Stewardship Plan. Feedback from stakeholders has enabled BCWI to identify areas
of priority concern within the watershed and the opportunties to engage citizen volunteers in
watershed stewardship activities. Central to this approach will be the formation of partnerships
with the stakeholders who participated in this process, along with others, to collaborate on
various projects in the future. The formation of citizen volunteer "StreamTeams" to address
some of the issues described in this report will occur. Education and outreach, water quality
monitoring, invasive species removal, riparian habitat restoration, creek-cleanups and habitat
assessments are potential activities in which StreamTeam volunteers can act as stewards for
watershed protection. StreamTeam Program Objectives include:
• Educate people about their relationship to streams and watersheds
• Provide public involvement opportunities to protect local streams
• Protect water resources through pollution prevention and water conservation.
Sa. Collaboration
KICP (www.keepitcleanpartnership.orQ) and PACE are two of many regional partnerships that
will be formed to address some of these water quality issues. Alsq partnerships will be formed
with the cities and towns of Nederland, Boulder, Louisville, Lafayette, Erie, Superior,
Broomfield and, Boulder County.
BCWI, KICP, the City of Boulder and the USGS are now working together in the formation of
StreamTeams. k1 certain areas, BCWI and the KICP have found overlap and opportuities for
collaboration on activities that include education and outreach, water quality monitoring,
restoration, creek clean-ups and invasive species removal. Although many volunteer
opportunities will be accomplished via this collaborative effort, BCWI will not limit itself to just
those activities identified with this partnership. To augment the activities under this partnership,
BCWI will also conduct volunteer opportunities managed by BCWI staff and conducted by
StreamTeam volunteers that best fit within our organizational scope of work.
Sb. Education and outreach
BCWI will contact representatives from stakeholder groups to formulate a strategy on how best
to inform and engage the public in invasive species education and eradication. Educating citizens
via face-to-face interaction about how their actions along streamside trails affect the watershed
10
