Sf. Creek Clean-ups
BCWI plans to implement Creels Clean-ups in the Towns of Superior and Nederland and on the
east campus of the University of Colorado.
56. Assessments
BCWI will collaborate with the USFS to engage mountain bikers in assessing the state of
riparian habitats that border forest service roads in the high country. A standard assessment form
could be used and volunteers will be trained and utilized to conduct these riparian habitat
assessments.
BCWI plans to give its volunteers the opportuiuty to assist the Boulder County Audubon Society
in assessing the riparian habitat surrounding their "Important Bird Areas" on eastern Boulder
Creels and at Valmont Reservoir.
BCWI will team up with the Boulder County PACE program to utilize volunteers in a
neighborhood outreach approach to assess the waste disposal practices of restaurants and service
stations, among other county businesses.
6. Volunteer Recruitment
Of course, none of these volunteer opportunities could happen without volunteers! BCWI plans
to use its existing database of over 600 individuals as the initial approach for volunteer
recruitment. The BCWI sponsored Watershed Forum series at the Boulder Public Library is
another avenue for volunteer recruitment.
Additionally, by worl~ing together with KICP, BCWI will be identify and contact volunteers.
BCWI will also have a presence during the summer of 2007 with booths at the Boulder Farmers
Market, the Boulder Creek Festival, NedFest and other outdoor community events to solicit
volunteers. An opport~inity to engage students as volunteers at CU and Naropa will be
undertaken in the fall of 2007 as well Finally, in the fall of 2007, public service announcements
in local newspapers and on radio stations along with letters to the editor and op-ed pieces to
those same media will be employed to solicit even more volunteers to join StreamTeams in
protection of the Boulder Creek watershed.
BCWI is highly excited and encouraged as to the potential for spirited and enthusiastic
involvement in stewardship activities by members of the greater Boulder community.
12
