Colorado Watershed Protection Fund Priorities:
The project is a cooperative community endeavor that meets the needs of all users. The
dam will no longer create a dangerous liability for the US Fish and Wildlife Service
(owners of the dam) and those who are recreating on the river will now do so without the
danger of being caught in the repeating wave. The chamlel is now open for fish
migration, allowing sensitive species a route up and down the river. The river will be
allowed to stabilize and vegetation to re-establish, which will improve fish and wildlife
habitat and protect banks from erosion.
MONITORING
The success of the project will be measured against established cross-sections, the safe
passage of boats during high flows (the absence of emergency rescue calls to the
Hotchkiss Fire Department), and by comparing water quality and biological data from
pre- and post-project measurements. NFRIA will continue to monitor the site to assess
effectiveness of the project, as well as obtain recommendations from neighboring
landowners for improvements. Maintenance to the site is anticipated to be minimal.
COORDINATION EFFORTS
NFRIA has received contributions from a diverse group of partners for this project:
Source of Funds
Col.
