ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT TO BE IMPROVED & REMAINING TASKS
This project was teclu7ically, financially, and logistically challenging. Working with
federal agencies is always a daunting task. Since the dam was owned by the US Fish and
Wildlife Service (USFWS), they had originally offered to grant money for its removal.
However, just weeks before the demolition date, they reneged and said they needed to
have their people take out the dam for liability reasons.
The Association worked with the USFWS to demolish the dam according to the original
layout plans, using the Army Corps 404 permit obtained by the Association. We then
completed restoration using the techniques and stil~ctures described above. It is hard to
say what could have been done differently to avoid this. We were able to quickly adapt
our plan to accommodate USFWS's needs.
In addition, a downstream landowner was nervous about what would happen to his
property once the dam was removed. The Association immediately held a facilitated
meeting with all the surrounding landowners (who had been involved in project planning,
but still had some queries) to discuss and answer questions. ki addition, an engineer from
the Army Corps of Engineers was present in an additional meeting to assure landowners
that the presence or absence of the dam is not a factor in firture damage from erosion that
might occur in downstream reaches. h1 the fiiture the planning portion of projects will be
improved by obtain neighboring landowner feedback well in advance of constn~ction
dates.
We are waiting to hear back from one last grant that can be used to remove more non-
native invasive weeds from the site. If we do receive the grant, we'll cut the trees this
March and then spray them when water levels go down in July. At this point, NFRIA can
trouble-shoot any problems that arise during high water and correct them in the fall of
2006.
