Section 2
Field Data Collection Objectives
evaluated; if the data is suitable for SPDSS requirements, the existing data will be
used in lieu of SPDSS data collection. Five stream gage locations (Henderson, Kersey,
Weldona, Balzac or Atwood, and Julesburg) will be included in the study.
An intensive investigation of streambed properties and gain/loss has previously been
conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) during which 30 cross-sections were
investigated on the main stem South Platte River between Denver and Ft. Lupton
(McMahon et al. 1995). Additionally the CWCB Flood Protection Group's detailed
floodplain cross-sections will be evaluated and, if suitable, used in lieu of performing
relevant tasks in the field program. The results of these field investigations will be
reviewed for data quality and benefit to the SPDSS, and pertinent results will be put
in a format for incorporation into HydroBase. The existence of these investigations
may allow CDM to investigate other parts of the study area in greater detail to meet
the data collection requirements of Task 34.
CDM will obtain necessary access agreements for sampling and testing of up to 30
locations along the main stem of the South Platte River and in selected tributaries. The
301ocations are anticipated to represent the range of stream channel conditions
(width, depth, braiding, etc.) and will be distributed relatively evenly along the main
stem with one at Henderson and the remaining from approximately Ft. Lupton to the
Nebraska State line and on selected tributaries (Cherry Creek, Sand Creek, Cache la
Poudre River, Box Elder Creek, and Beebe Draw) as access allows. Many of these
locations will likely require access to private property, though public easements will
be used at suitable locations. Tentative locations are shown on Figure 2-1; the final
locations will be based on site access constraints.
Five transects will be located at gaging stations on the South Platte River. Four of the
transects will be located adjacent to the existing SEO/USGS gaging stations (at
Henderson, Kersey, Balzac or Atwood, and Julesburg), where shallow monitoring
wells were outfitted with automated water level transducers and data loggers during
Phase 2. A fifth transect will be located adjacent to the existing SEO/USGS gaging
station at Weldona. At these locations, up to four additional cores will be sampled
upstream and/or downstream of the transect to help define local spatial variability.
2.2 Task 39 Proposed Water Level Monitoring Locations
2.2.1 Bedrock Monitoring Well Locations
During Phase 2, 109 wells were measured in the post-irrigation season in 2004. These
wells were identified and screened by reviewing well completion information of wells
currently in the SEO bedrock water level collection program, with the goal of
obtaining a widespread distribution of measurements in each bedrock aquifer of the
Denver Basin. Autumn post-irrigation water levels will be collected at these same
locations during Phase 3, assuming that no site access issues arise. The location of
bedrock wells that are proposed to be measured by the SPDSS or cooperating entities
are provided in Figure 2-2.
`~ ~
2-2
FINAL SPDSS T33 WORK PLAN &3-OS.DOC
