Section 2
Field Data Collection Objectives
Phase 1 and 2 of the SPDSS compiled available information on aquifer configuration,
aquifer hydraulic properties, and aquifer water levels. This work also included
installation of wells and a testing program to supplement existing aquifer data
sources. Field investigations summarized in this work plan are intended to provide
additional information to the SPDSS and will include streambed conductance testing
and monitoring of post-irrigation season water levels.
Field Activities recommended in SPDSS technical memoranda (TM) and developed in
Phase 3 SPDSS scoping activities include the following:
^ Identify locations for streambed conductance field investigations and obtain
necessary access agreements for sampling and testing of up to 301ocations along
the main stem of the South Platte River and in selected tributaries.
^ Collect up to six streambed sediment samples for grain size distribution analysis at
each of the selected testing locations (transects).
^ Install a temporary piezometer and test the streambed hydraulic conductivity at
one selected stream sediment coring location from each transect to develop an
empirical relationship between the streambed hydraulic conductivity and the
sediment grain-size distribution.
^ Determine the vertical hydraulic gradient across the streambed sediments at each
transect using temporary piezometers.
^ Determine the streambed geometry at each transect by surveying the channel cross-
sections or by using existing data supplied by CWCB.
^ Collect water level measurements during the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006 from
existing monitoring wells.
2.1 Task 34 Proposed streambed Conductance Testing
Locations
The objective of the Phase 3 streambed conductance testing program is to quantify the
groundwater flux across the streambed in the South Platte River and the mouths of
significant tributaries. To accomplish this objective, a generally even geographic
distribution of test sites will be studied. Figure 2-1 shows general locations of the 30
transects within the study area that have been targeted for investigation during Phase
3. Exact locations will depend on site access availability to be determined in Task 34
prior to field work. Locations presented in Figure 2-1 are approximate and may be
changed should the study area be expanded by the State. It is anticipated that at
several locations bridge crossings will be used. Data from previous studies will be
`~ ~
2-1
FINAL SPDSS T33 WORK PLAN &3-OS.DOC
