The task of identifying contaminant sources was not completed during this phase of the
project. The focus of the data assessment was identifying baseline conditions and
comparing them to published recommended thresholds. The Project Team agreed that it
was too early in the process to discuss sources. Previous Forum research has indicated
that wastewater treatment plants are major sources of phosphorus and nitrogen
enrichment. The Project Team determined it was more important to focus on developing
consensus on the threats posed by nutrients, such as excessive weed growth and declining
dissolved oxygen, than to "point fingers". Therefore, identifying contaminant sources
has been postponed to a later phase of the project.
First
Name Last
Name
Or anization
Bert Cushing Colorado State University -Retired
Tina Laidlaw U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Bill Lewis University of Colorado
Jim Loftis Colorado State University -Retired
Jim Saunders Colorado Water Quality Control Division
Table 3. This goal was accomplished by soliciting participation
through our website, a press release and corresponding newspaper article, letter and
postcard sent through U.S. mail and a public meeting. An example solicitation letter and
postcard are in Appendix C and D.
-11-
