Water users found that the crop type distribution mapped in the preliminary
parcel data was reasonably accurate. Although many of the ditch company personnel could only
remember what they and their immediate neighbors had grown in 2001, they stated that the distribution of
crops mapped in their service area was very common for a typical year. The particular parcels that were
verified were attributed in the irrigated parcels shapefile. One source of error was parcels classified as
`vegetable crops'. This was expected because this class is difficult to classify with Landsat imagery. All
the information gathered about crop types was attributed in the irrigated parcels database and used to
further refine the classification. SPDSS Technical Memorandum 89.2 contains further information on the
final crop type classification.
Water users also provided information about irrigation source. As stated in Section 2.3.2 some water
users identified parcels irrigated by surface water, ground water, or parcels irrigated with surface water
and supplemented with ground water. This information was attributed in the parcels. The water users did
not always know the water source for every parcel. However, they would often identify some parcels as
being `ground water only' or state that these parcels were `supplemental' and the rest were `surface water
only'. In some instances, the exact irrigation well irrigating a parcel was identified.
Table 4 shows a summary of the information obtained on water source. The column `No User
Information' shows the amount of land where no specific information on irrigation source was obtained.
Page 9 of 55 ~R~versfde FecAno[o`(!~Y fnc.
4'JaYer Resources Errgi~ecr:np an~i L~ar+suFlrnd
