A map is attached which shows sites and loca-
tions mentioned in this section.

A, Synoptic Scale Weather Analysis and Forecasting:

As in past seasons, this task relies upon a cooperative agreement
between DRI and the FAA and the National Weather Service (NWS) of NOAA
for access to their weather reporting facilities at the Reno Airport
(RNO) , The FAA provides facsimile weather maps and satellite cloud
photographs, The NWS provides real-time upper air maps, prognostic
charts and many other special plots on their AFOS system. All of this
information is studied, culled and annotated, Use of FAA and NWS
facilities and information systems results in major economic savings
in developing weather forecasts by avoiding the costs of duplicating
such equipment and the personnel needed to maintain it, It also pro-
vides frequent opportunities to discuss current weather and prognoses
with experienced forecasters at any time of day or night, The use and
collection of these data requires visits to RNO three or four times
weekly during fair weather periods and once or twice daily during storm
periods, There are two main purposes of this task: (1) archiving
synoptic data for later analysis; and (2) preparation of forecasts and
nowcasts specific to the research and operational activities of DRI
in Scpp,

(1) Synoptic data archives. The collection, reduction and an-
notation of facsimile weather maps and satellite photographs has been

__ ~.c~~.__.~._
