<':J "

.j'

Ii

.

'.

1.2

carried on year-round for 22 years, and has resulted in a unique
collection of weather data for research in synoptic climatology, The
FAA and NWS maps and photographs also support ORIls involvement in
case studies of storms of importance to SCPP,

(2) Weather forecasts and nowcasts: Weather forecasts and now-
casts relevant to the Central Sierra Nevada are conveyed to colleagues
concerned with the radar field studies and snow sampling logistics,
and are used in the coordination of ORI research and operational ac-
tivities with those of other members of SCpp, This information enables
the ORI participants in SCPP to understand the rationale for plans
discussed in conference calls, and it provides a basis for other deci-
sions affecting both the operation of ORI cloud seeding generators and
the suspension of such operations, Of special concern this season
will be the coordination of ORI operational seeding activities in the
Truckee and Carson watersheds with the cloud seeding experiments
planned by SCPP using ORI, SMUD and PG&E ground-based AgI generators.

B. Mesoscale Measurements and Observations:

This task focuses on an area of over 1,000 square miles compris-
ing the east slope of the Central Sierra Nevada, the Carson Range and
the watershed of Lake Tahoe and the Truckee River (see map), Within
the area are approximately 40 sites where rain and snowfall are mea-
sured, two mountain summit weather stations which provide real-time
data, and several special study areas where the effects of weather
and climate on terrain, vegetation, wildlife, water resources and
human activities have been studied continuously for over 20 years,
The major parts of this task are discussed briefly below.

(1) Mesoscale precipitation network. After each storm, rain
and snowfall are measured at about 40 sites in the Lake Tahoe water-
shed, At about 15 of these sites heated tipping-bucket snow gauges
