Pa g e 18

The system consists of an antenna assembly, antenna control unit,

receiver and strip chart recorder. The chart record provides

temperature, humidity, pressure level and reference signal

traces. The automatic tracking system incorporates a digital

printer and averaging unit for recording the elevation and

azimuth angles to the balloon-borne radiosonde instrument.

The digital printer and strip chart readings are manually entered
into a computer. A software routine then provides vertical
profiles of wind speed and direction, and temperature and
dewpoint temperature.

7. Tethersonde system

A mobile balloon-borne tethersonde system (Atmospheric
Instrumentation Research, Inc.) will be utilized to determine
pressure (~0.1 mb), temperature (~ .50C), humidity (~ 5%), wind
direction (~50) and speed (~0.3 m s-l) at various locations
upwind of and above the Mogollon Rim. A light, portable winch is
used to control the balloon flight. A two-point tether allows
the balloon to orient into the wind. However, the balloon cannot
be flown in winds exceeding about 10 m s-l. Provided the
windspeed does not exceed this value on a sustained basis, the
