Ice particle imaging probes

A ground-based aspirated PMS (Particle Measuring Systems) 2D-C
particle imaging probe will be operated at the Happy Jack site.
It will produce two-dimensinal images of ice particles passing
through the laster beam between the probe tips. These are
recorded on 9 track magnetic tape for later compute processing to
determine crystal sizes !ind concentrations and to estimate the
snowfall rate.

The 2D-C probe observations will be supplemented periodically by
35 mm photographic slides of the ice crystals that settle on a
glass plate during a known exposure period. A strobe li~lht
slaved to the camera shutter will illuminate the crystals. The
camera system, of local manufacture, has been used successfully
on the Grand Mesa of western Colorado. The system is operated in
a small shelter with a IO-inch diameter IIchimneyll allowing ice
crystal fallout into the shelter.

6. Rawinsonde systems

A WeatherMeasu re RD-65A rawi nsonde system wi 11 be emp 1 oye~d in the
Verde River Valley near the town of Camp Verde. Soundings from
this site will provide information on the atmospheric structure
upwind of the Happy Jack region of the Mogollon Rim.
