4

II. SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
During 1982-83, the thrust of the software development effort at CSU has

concentrated on development of processing and analysis programs for aircraft

and Ku-band radar data.
Two major additions to radar processing programs were developed for

the Utah program. The first was the inclusion of a calibration correction

for low-level attenuation due to TR tube recovery time. This calibration

was cdmpleted at the ,Boulder Atmospheric Observatory (BAO) tower on 13 January

1983, just prior to moving the system to Utah. The second major development

was a program to display a time-height cross-section of radar reflectivity and

to list several parameters including cloud top and the height of the maximum dBZ.

This program was used to process all of the tapes covering all observation

periods. The output from the entire data set was distributed to all participants.

During the first year analysis, significant progress was made in software

development for the Cheyenne II aircraft. The following programs were

modified or developed for processing the field program data.

1. Transfer of the eIe reduction program from the Hewlett-Packard

system to the esu Cyber system to facilitate earlier and faster

analyses for state parameter and FSSP data.

2. Development of a preprocessing program to determine the JW clear

air offset and subtract it from the JW data.

3. Development of a regression analysis program and plotting program

to compare liquid water contents from the JW and FSSP.

In addition to these software developments, esu, with NSF funding, has

developed a program to analyze and plot microwave radiometer data in time/azimuth

plots. These programs will be available for analysis of the Utah 1983 field

data during 1983-84.

~

:

~

~

~
