III. KU-BAND RADAR ANALYSIS

Colorado State University provided its Ku-band radar to th,c Utah field

effort of 1983 and participated in the reduction and analysis of the data

set. Four work tasks were included in the CSU effort. These included

providing the radar to the Utah field effort, conversion of field tapes to

processed final tapes, providing tabular data and reflectivity displays of

radar parameters. and performing significant data analysis of certain storm

systems.

A. Ku-Band Radar Field Operations

CSU provided its vertically pointing Ku-band radar to field operations

in southern Utah during the period 13 January 1983 - 23 March 1983. Details

of the radar operations. calibrations. field installation and removal. and

problems encountered during the field phase are summarized in Appendix B.

B. Data Reduction of Field Tapes

CSU received 14 Ku-band field tapes for reduction and processing from

the Utah field site. These tapes were immediately checked for quality.

The data on these tapes were processed during the month of April 1983.

Two processe.d data tapes containing reflectivity values and other information

for the entire field program were provided to all interested project

participants on 1 May 1983. Complete tables of all Ku-band data received

by CSU, an assessment of data quality. tape documentation. and information

to assist in data interpretation are summarized in Appendix B.

C. Data Display Programs

During the early portions of the 1983 analysis period. CSU developed

programs to display Ku-band reflectivity time/height diagrams and tabular

displays of cloud top height. maximum dBZ. and other parameters. These

were provided to all project participants on 21 July 1983. Details

concerning this data is included in Appendix B.
