.

mid-level (altocumulus or altostratus) or lower-level (stratus) cloud

deck. A Potential Seeding Period, on the other hand, coincided with the

time period' when the operational project seeding criteria were met in

the research area. Notations of such periods of "seedability" for the

Tushar Mtns area were made by NAWC personnel- in Salt Lake City at the

same time that they determined whether seedab le or not-seedab le con-

ditions existed ~n the operational project area to the southwest in

.

.

~lashington County.

In 1985, because of wet conditions, a decision had

.

been made not to seed in the research area even if there was a Potential

Seeding Period. A Potential Seeding Period could be longer or shorter

than a STORM but usually was shorter because more substantial clouds are

generally required for seeding than for research. The existence of a

STORM was jointly determined by the research program Field Director and

the Field Scientist. Neither of them was involved in the determination

.

.

of a Potential Seeding Period.

That was the responsibility of North

American Weather Consultants personnel in Salt Lake City who were con-

ducting the operational seeding project.

In v~ew of the potentially simultaneous STORMS and Potential

Seeding Periods some kinds of communication between operational project

personnel ~n Salt Lake City and research program personnel in Beaver

~rerepurposely restricted. There was no communication as to' whether

c:louds in the research area did or did not meet the operational project

~.

'.

seeding criteria.

Weather information and forecasts were provided to

.

the research program from the NAWC operational project control center ~n

Salt Lake City, however, and this was an important cooperative feature

of the operational project and research program. The information was

provided without comment as to any implications for Potential Seeding

--

-16-

.
