.

Periods.

Similclrly, Adamsville rawinsonde launch decisions by either

.

the operational project or research program were not revealed to the

other group. These various steps were taken in order to help ensure

that research da.ta were gathered on all STORMS in a manner unbiased by

any declaration or oth-erwise of a Potentinl Seeding Period.

e. Potential effect of the operational seeding on clouds in the

research area. Although the only intended point of contact between the

operational proj ect and the research program was through the weather

forecasts made in Salt Lake City, there o;.;ras the possibility of physical

contact through the transport of silver iodide from the Washington

County seeding area to the Tushar Mtns research area. No specific field

effort was mounted to address this possible long-range transport of

seeding material. into the study area where no seeding was intended.

Indirect evidence of the likelihood of trcmsport was collected, however,

with rawinsondes launched from Adamsville.

During portions of nine STORMS seeding was conducted in the

Washington County area. Figure 3 shows which ground generators operated

during at least part of each of these STORMS. Figures 4, 5 and 6 show

the time .in each of the STORMS during which seeding occurred at one or

more of the generators, the duration of that seeding, and the winds as

.

.

.

.

.

.

measured with the Adamsville rawinsonde.

The seeding tended to occur

.

during the latter parts of the STORMS. This was unintentional inasmuch

as the NAWC personnel in charge of the sE!eding program had no knowledge

of when STORMS were occurring. The seeding may have occurred during the

latter part of a STORM in the Beaver nrea simply for meteorologica 1

reasons since most winter weather systems move toward the south and

occur first in the Beaver area and then in the Washington County area.

.

.

-l7-
