.

.'

criteria that thle seeding ~n any year has a chance of making additional

snowfall.

Despite the exclusion of some clouds from the 1985 operational

seeding project it was necessary in the field research program to study

clouos in the excluded as well as included groups. It was important to

study the clouds which did not meet the seeding criteria since infor-

mation and understanding gained about them could suggest ways to seed

them in future operational projects and increase their snowfall. This

could have the effect of extending thE! seeding to more clouds and

increasing the amount of snowfall on the ground. It was equally impor-

tant to study the clouds which did ~!t the seeding criteria since

information and understanding gained about them could reveal better ways

to seed them or even that seeding some of them would not be effective.

Studying clouds in both groups should incr.ease our understanding of all

of them and, potentially, improve the specificity and effectiveness of

fu~ure seeding that may occur. The 1985 field research program, there-

fore, studied all clouds in the Tushar Mtns research area ~n either

group--those meE!ting the seeding criteria and those not meeting the

seeding criteria. This was a key feature of the research program. Data

were therefore collected at every feasible opportunity.

In view of the 'simultaneous conduct of the research program and

operational project two periods of time wcere defined: the STORM and the

.

.

.

e.

.

e'

.

Potential Seeding Period.

A STORM determined and coincided with a

period of research.

It occurred wheneVE!r there was significant cloud

.

cover in the TUi3har Mtns research area. Significant c loud cover meant

any cloud with ~l perceived non-zero probnbility of producing precipita-

tion on the Tushar Mtns. As a minimum this meant a broken to overcast

.

-l5-
