ORA F T

SECTION IV - PLANNING PHASE HISTORY AND GENERAL
PROGRAM APPROACH

This section reviews the research and planning activities to date for
weather modification in the Colorado River. These activities form an
important part of the background of this conceptual plan.

Research Projects Background

Five major winter research and recent operational cloud seeding
programs in the Colorado River region contributed directly to the
development of technology.

1. The National Science Foundation sponsored research experiments
by Colorado State University at Climax, Colorado, during the
1960's.

;2. The operational research funded by the State of Colorado
during the 1960's at several mountain passes, particularly Wolf
Creek Pass in the San Juan mountains.

3. The Bureau of Reclamation sponsored experiments in the Park
Range near Steamboat Springs, Colorado, during the late 1960's.

4. The Bureau of Reclamation's large Colorado River Basin Pilot
Project in the San Juan mountains in the early 1970's.

22
