.

The second forecast variabll~ is wind direction and speed at the 700 mb
and 500 mb levels. Thesl~ winds will affect the launch of constant
volume balloons and the SF6 trajectories in the seeding material deli-
very experiments. The winds will also determine the trajectories of
cloud and precipitation particles observed by the Doppler radars. Co-
ordination of the radars will thus depend on the wind forecasts. The
third forecast. variable is the vertical atmospheric temperature strati-
fication. This will affect conditions of stability, determine at what
density altitudes constant volume balloons may be set to float, and
affect the height of the me'lting level. Supplementing the forecasts of
these three variables will be current data on significant cloud cover,
wind velocities, and temperclture stratification. A skew T-Iog p plot of
the most recent Adamsville sClunding and NWS forecasts and information on

existing weather will be made part of the research program forecast when

practical. The forecast will be issued on a standard form.

Supplementing the forecasts issued at the two scheduled times will

be monitoring of the current weather. Because western Utah and the

upwind areas of Nevada are relatively data sparse, weather can develop

in these regions rather unexpectedly and soon affect the research area.

Close attention to the weather will be required in order not to miss

research opportu nities.

b. Meteorological observations. Meteorological observations will

be made at the Field Headquarters and at the NCAR C-band radar and

Merchant Valley remote sensing sites by personnel in charge at each

site. The observations will include wind, cloud cover, and precipita-

tion amounts and types. Observations will be made at least hourly

during STORMS but more often if the weather dictates.
