Thompson ct al. 1975). Seeding material was released from ground or
airborne locations during convective band passages and the effects of the seeding were examined
in temlS of precipitation observed by a large network of rain gauges. More recent thinking
regarding evaluation of weather modification programs has emphasized the importance of
physical measurements that can be made to document the impacts of seeding at dilTerent stages
in the production and fallout of precipitation, in addition to statistical assessment of the ellccts of
seeding. This documentation of physical changes that may be caused by seeding has been
rc:lcrred to as "links in the chain of tHoIS" which progresses from the release of seeding
material through augmented precipitation reaching the ground (assuming the conceptual model
and seeding execution are correct). Figure 9, belov.... demonstrates this concept.

Santa Barbara County
Precipitation Enhancement Program

-

'"

...

~J.::

~

liO-

J

Fil:llTe 9, Schemlllic i11lutralioll oflhe phJ.5ical chain of I!l'ellls thaI/em/from .lif!edilll: of
sllillIb/e c10lUlf 10 illcreased precipitulioll 0/1 the grolllUL
n ~t""Jtht'r [}.l.11J;tg~ .\tudificlltitJn Pn'1:l1lm 21
