General
The Kingvale !:!.igh Altitude !:.iquid Water Qbservatory (HALO) will be
reestablished this year. The Bureau's dual-channel radiometer, GML (Ground
Microphysics Laboratory), ORIls vertically pointing Ka band radar, a rawin-
sonde system (discussed in previous section), equipment for chemical tracer
studies, and a variety of other equipment for coordinated observations will be
located at the Kingvale HALO (1856 m m.s.l.). To provide real-time radiometer
and temperature data to the Auburn office, a PROBE station has been installed
inside the radiometer which will relay information to Auburn.

The Kingvale site is located within a high altitude region of the aerial
seeding fixed target area that poses the greatest precipitation gauge density
and the best precipitation data base. Several digitized weighing bucket pre-
cipitation gauges will be operated at Kingvale (see section on gauge network
for more details). Precipitation amounts from one of these gauges will also
be relayed via satellite by the PROBE station co-located at the site.

The PROBE station and digital precipitation gauge will be operated at Kingvale
for the entire field season. GML equipment and snow chemistry sampling equip-
ment will be made available from approximately November 3, 1986, to January 9,
1987. Radiometer data will be available from October IS, 1986, and Ka band
radar operations are planned from November 3, 1986, until January 9, 1987.

As much as 4 hours of data sampling is required per aerial seeding operation.
Sampling will start 1 hour prior to the expected arrival of seeding effects.
Approximately two hours are required to sample the four separate 30-min exper-
imental units, then a I-hour after period is required.

II 1-15
