3. Rawinsonde Data Processing
The CLASS system provides pressure, temperature, humidity, wind direction and
speed components every 5 seconds. The data wi 11 be pre-processed through an
HP-9816 computer at the respective rawinsonde sites. A five-point averaging
technique will be applied to the pressure and wind components, while the tem-
perature and humi dity wi 11 be taken as is. A fil e wi 11 be created from the
averaged 5-second data file which will consist of 5 mb interpolated levels.
This new 5 mb file will be available for transfer to the Perkin-Elmer
mainframe in Auburn.

The rawinsonde transfer will take place in two parts as described below:

Part 1: The HP CLASS computer will provide a 5 mb sounding file which must be
transferred to the Perkin-Elmer computer. This will be accomplished by
dialing: 888-1333 (1200 baud), 888-1334 (1200 baud), 888-1335 (1200 baud)

Proper sign-on will be S SITE,9,CLASS
where SITE is KV for Kingva1e or SH for Sheridan

Upload procedures from the HP to the Perkin-Elmer wi 11 then commence. The
details of this procedure are currently being outlined and will be available
for the field season.

Part 2: The file must be checked for transmission errors. This will be done
by sending the same file twice, but with different names. The files will be
compared by a program at which time the rawinsonde operator must resolve any
differences. The details of this program and how it will be operated will be
available when the field season begins.

The data will be placed in the data base after software has been developed to
select mandatory and significant levels.

111-14

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
