Acknowledgements

It was only possible to perform this large, emergency program because
of the special help provided by many individuals and groups. We would
like to acknowledge the following in this report, while noting that others
too numerous to mention also contributed greatly.

.

The FTR field crew performed admirably under very trying conditions.
,They maintained the aircraft, modified the various dispenser systems;
and did the flying. During the most active phases of the program in late
August and early September this meant many hours of work daily, under
considerable pres'sure. ln the program extension phas~ in late September
and early October, they stayed on-call without compensation and then at a
moments notice would go via airline and rental car to Altus for each
operational sequence.

The C-97 was made available by the Foundation for Airborne Relief.
At the time, it represented the only operational C-97 in civilian hands.
The Foundation was especially helpful in making the plane available on
such short notice, and permitting its use with unusually low minimum
guarantees.

Edwards Air Force Base made the dispenser system available to the Bureau
of Reclamation for this program, and also provided a calibrator. They
pushed through the necessary paperwork in a very short time, which permitted
the whole program to get a fast start. Capt. Jack .Wallace was responsible
for the organizational details and authorizations; Mr. Joseph Dowden helped
both wit h the technical aspects of the equipment and official matters, and
Capt. Robert Willman came to Altus and aided with our installation, operations,
and calibration trials.

~

We were fortunate in being able to operate out of Altus Air Force Base.
The unique facilities there in fueling, servicing, and modifying and repairing
the C-97 system were essential to the success of the operation. Altus AFB
loaned the MAlA to the program, and gave us storage facilities and an office.
We were able to use the AFB weather station, and monitor weather on their
radar. At least three dozen people there went far out of their way to help us.
We cannot acknowledge them individually. We hope it will suffice to note
here that Co!. Glass, the Base Commander, and Major Bergeman. Dirpctor
of Operations and Training saw to it that every possible help was provided.

'.

38

-
