<br />Section 5. - Precipitation Gauges <br /> <br />A total of twelve Belfort weighing dual-traverse precipitation gauges were <br />operated at eight sites, identified in Table 5-1, during the 1985-86 winter. <br />The Belfort Model 5-780 (weighing type) gauges were modified from the standard <br />8-inch (20.3 cm) diameter orifice to either a large orifice (LG) 17.9-inch <br />(45.5 cm) or a small orit!,ce (SM) 1l,J.:-j r)~b~(Z_f.!~L...f!!1J dlameter-fOfncrease <br />their resolut~ the cifpacity of the 17.9-inch gauge is about 2.4 inches <br />(6.1 cm) of liquid precipitation and that of the 11.3-inch gauge is about 6 <br />inches (15.2 cm). These gauge orifices are 5 and 2 times the area of the <br />standard 8-inch gauge, respectively. Data were recorded on strip charts at <br />all locations. The Island Lake site was also monitored by a PROBE station to <br />provide precipitation and other information in near real-time. <br /> <br />Precipitation gauge data are being extracted hourly for the large orifice <br />gauges at GMO East and GMO West and in 6-hour blocks for the other units.
