The Rio Colorado Irrigation District reports that wells are used to irrigate approximately
135,500 acres (or 30%) of the irrigable land in Mexicali Valley and 40,000 acres (or 60%) of
the irrigable land in San Luis Valley

Reported and Estimated Volume of Groundwater
Extracted Mexico's Irrigation District 14
Intake at
Volume
Source Morelos
(acre-feet) (acre-feet)

1,398,700
1,395,500
1,976,700
1,897,700

IBWC 2,346,200

Year

1990
1992
1993
1999
1979-1981
1983-1988
1978,1982,
1989

900,000
690,000
807,000
730,000

CNA
IBWC
IBWC
CNA

548,500

650,600

IBWC

1,399,400

Source: Pacific Institute, 2001, "Missing Water: The Uses and
Flows of Water in the Colorado River Delta Region", p. 24

Flows to the Colorado River Delta. Ciene2a de Santa Clara. and the Salton Sea
. Colorado River water (surface water and groundwater) that is not consumed by irrigated
crops, evapotranspiration in the Mexicali and San Luis Valleys, or municipal and industrial
users in San Luis-RioColorado, Mexicali, Tecate, an Tiajuana-Rosarita eventually flows to
the Cienega de Santa Clara, Colorado River Delta, or the Salton Sea

Cienega de Santa Clara
. Drainage from irrigated lands in the San Luis Valley flows to the Riito Drain which flows to
the Cienega de Santa Clara

. Approximately 25,000 acre-feet per year flows from the Riito Drain to the Cienega

. The primary source of water flowing to the Cienega is the drainage water from the Wellton-
Mohawk Irrigation and Drainage District. The drainage from WMIDD is routed by a lined
canal approximately 37 miles from the SIB to the Cienega

. The average annual discharge from the WMIDD bypass drain for the period 1990-2001 IS
107,700 acre-feet per year..

Colorado River Delta
. The sources of Colorado, River water that flows into the delta region include Colorado River
. flows not diverted at Morelos Dam, municipal/industrial wastewater and sewage effluent
from San Luis-Rio Colorado" and agricultural drainage from southern Mexicali Valley that
flows to the delta via the Rio Pescaderos and Rio Hardy

. The combined estimated mean annual flow of agricultural drainage to the delta region from
the Rio Pescaderos and Rio Hardy is approximately 70,000 acre-feet

SNW A Resources 4/24/02
