Groundwater Productiull
. Groundwater is produced from 4~9 federally owned and operated wells and 236 privatdy
owned wdls (725 total)

. Groundwater is used to augment surface water supplies ddivered at the NIB. SIB. and
Limitrophe Division

. Sources of groundwater recharge to the Colorado River aquifer include underflow from the
U.S. ..eross the Iimitrophe .md SIB. seepage from the AAC, and recharge resulting from the
application of water for irrigation in Mexicali and San Luis Valleys (e.g. sccpage from
unlined canals, ditches, and drains; over-application of water un irrigated lands)

. Thc Rio Colorado Irrigation District has up to 727,000 acre feet of groundwater available
during llonJlal years when Mexico is delivered 1.500,000 acre-feet

. Private well owners extract an unspecified amount of groundwater, but irrigate
approximately 60,000 acres

. Estimates of groundwater production vary from 500,000 to I,OOO,DOO acre-feet per year. The
mugnitudc of groundwater productin!l appears to be related 10 the magnitude of Colorat!u
River water delivered .11 the intemational bnundury (i.e. high now years equates 10 Icss
groundwatcr production)
