(ESA).
On October 18, 2000 the USFWS issued a final rule to list the Colorado Butterfly Plant
(Gaura neomexicana ssp. Coloradensis) as a Federally threatened species under the ESA.
Both species share a common habitat, very generally, riparian areas of Colorado.

I
APPENDIX D - PLANT SllJRVEY SOW'S
I
I
I
I
UTE LADIES'-TRESSES AND
I
COLORADOBUTTERFLY~LANTSURVEYS
I
SCOPE OF wqRK
I
I
INTRODUCTION
I
,

PROJECT PURPOSE

Under provisions oqhe ESA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is responsible
for conservation and protection of any Threatened or Endangered Species occurring on
Corps project lands. The presence or absence ofthestl two Federally Listed Threatened
plants needs to be ascertained in order to assess potential impacts of proposed alternative
plans for water storage reallocation at Chatfield Lake, presently under study.

A survey will be conducted by amending the current contract (DACW 45-03-C-00 16)
with Tetra Tech FW, Inc. Surveys will be conducted in the years 2005 and 2006. The
contractor will comply with all criteria established by the USFWS.

TASKS

Task 1 - Prepare for and Conduct Reconnaissance Survey. This task includes using
available photos, maps and site visit to identifY sites that have best potential to provide
habitat for both plants. Criteria developed by the USFWS will be used to guide the
selection of sites tio be further evaluated.

Task 2 - Conduct Detailed Surveys. This task consists ofthorough onsite survey of
sites identified in the reconnaissance task. The contractor will collect the following
information at each survey site; list the most frequent or dominant associated plant
species of both the overstory and understory vegetation; describe the plant community;
describe the ecological condition/management history of the site; describe the
geomorphology of the site, including, for example, the nature of the material and the
landscape position; describe the soils and list the map unit from the Soil Conservation
Service county soil survey if available; describe the hydrologic characteristics; describe
other relevant site characteristics. In addition, for each site where a plant is found the
following information will be collected; map showing location; count of the number or

1
