Water Conservation and Efficiency Technical Roundtable Meeting #1
Meeting Summary
Question for both M&I and Ag
^ What are the constraints on ability to use water that is saved as the result of implementation
of conservation and efficiency measures?
Following is a summary of the comments and questions for each of the nine questions that the
TRT agreed to address.
Comments / Questions f or M&I Question 1:
^ Need to distinguish between conservation and temporary demand reduction - water
suppliers may be going after same water with both methods.
^ Xeriscape - if everyone goes to this, what next?
^ Many citizens would like to know the role that conservation serves relative to water supply
issues.
^ Will increased conservation cause compact issues?
Comments / Questions f or M&I Question 2:
^ This question is different for each municipality and a clear understanding of how
conservation measures impacts reliability needs to be addressed.
^ The relationship between reliability and emergency drought conservation measures needs to
be addressed with this question.
^ Municipalities need to share what they have done with their systems to generate a common
understanding.
^ Demand reductions are not necessarily "banked" and may be used elsewhere in a providers
system.
^ Demand management can help address peaks within a water supply system.
^ Additional savings can be achieved during times of drought with system-wide restrictions.
^ This question provides an opportunity f or municipalities to provide data.
^ Cost/ AF savings is meaningless because of off setting costs.
^ There is linkage to reuse/ grey water issues with this question.
^ When using the levels of conservation as presented we need to be careful about statements
such as "by implementing measure x, will get x% of savings." Not all the measures are one
size f its all.
Comments / Questions f or M&I Question 3:
^ This questions assumes that M&I can pay and that may not necessarily the case f or some
M&I consumers.
^ Heavy increasing rate block structure impacts low income individuals.
^ What is the political ability to pay?
^ What will/might municipalities forgo without the rates needed to provide a safe and reliable
water supply - operation and maintenance.
Comments / Questions f or M&I Question 4:
^ At some point land use and sustainability needs to be addressed or at least identified as a
major part of addressing our water future.
^ How do conservation measures impact water delivery reliability.
r« ~
C:1Documents and SettingslrowannclMy Documentsl1-desktoplWater Cons Eff TRT #1 Summary.doc
