Mike Gshorteiung the time frame for this to reduce negative effects of straight river jump
starting the process to make a more natural stream.
Alan -the flatter the slope the more sinuousity a strean~/river should havetrying to put it back
thereaccelerating evolution of stream by 200 years-have 17 landowners supportinb only
worlang in active channel.
Steve Valmost 40 years since straightening was done and no real healing has occurred
channeled the river 15 to 18 ft deep making many diversions impossible and deposited materials
below and messed up those diversions-trying to slow down river to allow diversions to function
and establish riparian area.
AlanStream over the years has continued to down cut and build up-reach remains unstable
unless we repair it.
Mike G- explained that whole application is on website and explains the reasoning and methods
for achieving this restoration.
Doug S-moves to send the application forward with our Roundtable's recommendation for
frinding.
Cindy M- seconded.
Vote unanimous in favor.
b. This will be accomplished through the purchase (willing
seller/willing buyer) of conservation easements on land & senior surface water rights important
to agriculture, wildlife habitat & the SLV's water sustainability.
Discussion about the project:
Doug -see this as one of the most important projects we have.
Ray -sees that keeping the "sponge" along the riparian corridor intact is key to water
sustainability.
Fred -raised objections such as concerned that hay fields are biological deserts, that this project
would limit population growth in the SLV and thus keep us from achieving the population level
necessary to provide for better infrastructure and services and a more interesting community.
Requests that letter to CWCB includes his concerned that hay production is a very small amount
of econonuc production- water converted (used) to almost any other use produces a higher
economic return by 20 to 30 times- in his opinion there is not enough population in SLV to
Rio Grande Basile Roundtable-Meeting Miliutes Jul~T 14, 2007 Page 3
