Water Supply Reserve Account ? Grant Application Form
Form Revised May 2007
_______________________________________
Task 2: Evaluate the Penman-Monteith equation for growing conditions in the Arkansas Valley.
2a. Collection of weather data - Accurate weather data are required to use the Penman-Monteith equationto
compute reference ET. A comprehensive weather station has been installed at the Arkansas Valley Research
Center (CSU AVRC) adjacent to the lysimeter. In addition, this project maintains and operates a series of
weather stations in Arkansas Valley. These stations are a component of the COAgMet system at CSU and their
locations are shown in the following map.
2b. Maintenance of weather instrumentation ? One major task for the project staff will be to insure that each
weather station is collecting accurate data. Equipment failures are detected by routine monitoring of the data
collected and appropriate repairs are conducted as soon as possible. Routine maintenance and regular calibration
of instruments are needed and will be conducted in the off-season whenever possible. Since one objective of the
project is to determine crop coefficients for the Penman-Monteith equation, accurate meteorological and water
use are both critical components. The data required to calculate reference ET with the Penman-Monteith
equation is mean daily maximum and minimum air temperature, humidity, net radiation and wind speed.
2c. Deliverables ? The weather station network will provide daily information on daily maximum and minimum
air temperature, humidity, net radiation and wind speed. An example of the data collected from the weather
station network is shown below for August 1, 2007 for the COAgMet sites in the Arkansas River Basin.
9
