Budget
It is important to recognize that this funding request provides partial support for the research associate position that is
essential for ongoing operation of the lysimeters and the the COAgMet weather stations. The components of the start-
up funding for this long-term project are summarized in this budget section. The overall, long-term budget
requirements are defined in Appendix 1.
Funding Requested from Arkansas Basin Roundtable
- This funding request is to provide partial support for
the staff and operations of the weighing lysimeter installed at the Arkansas Valley Research Center (CSU
AVRC). The operation of the lysimeter requires employment of skilled personnel who are knowledgeable about
the intricacies of lysimeter installation and operation. Bret Schafer was initially employed by the AVRC and was
instrumental in the successful installation and initiating calibration of the test lysimeter instrumentation. Bret
resigned in December, 2006, and Lane Simmons was hired as a full-time research associate for the project.
The amount requested of $50,000 will be used in 2008 and 2009 to provide staff salaries and operating expenses for
the lysimeters and weather network activities. The approximate distribution of expenses will be as follows:
Expenditure
Salaries and Wages ? Lane Simmons $37,000
Indirect costs ? 26% of direct costs $13,000
Total costs $50,000
The construction of the test and reference lysimeters and upgrading of instrumentation in the COAgMet weather
station network were funded by a grant from the CWCB to CSU for $340,000. None of these funds were targeted for
ongoing operation of the lysimeters or the weather network. Furthermore, ongoing resources have not been identified
within the Department of Natural Resources to fund the annual salary and operational needs of the lysimeters and
weather station network.
11
