undisturbed. Some selective access and habitat improvements will be made, and the opportunity
exists to partner with the Division of Wildlife in order to enhance fish habitat and create high
quality "holding" water (see Appendix 2). The relatively low grade ofthis stretch and the bend
in the river sets this preserve apart from the rest of the whitewater park, providing visual
isolation for those wishing to fish in an undisturbed setting. The lack of white water specific
improvements will encourage quiet pass through for kayakers moving from the top two features
to the next section.

Section 3: This section includes the last major in-stream features. Two hydraulics will be
positioned in a similar fashion as the first two, but these will be more directed towards park-and-
play kayaking. The third and final feature is not only going to be the largest and most significant
for play boating, but it will be the prevailing spot for people out of their kayaks as well. This
area is geared for large groups of people, and a stone terraced bank will function as an access
point to connect the trails with the whitewater park. Because ofthis area's ability to
accommodate large groups it is ideal for a competition venue and other events that will bring
people to the Arkansas River Valley from all across the country.

Finally, the pool located behind the last hydraulic will be deepened and expanded to provide a
swimming and whitewater recreation area for users of all ages and abilities. Interaction between
the in-stream whitewater improvements and the bank environment is critical at this site where
pedestrians and swimmers will be prevalent. All of these proposed improvements are intended

The existing
cliffs, seen here,
are the dominant
natural feature
highlighted by
the Section 3
improvements.

to blend seamlessly into the natural environment while providing enhanced recreation at the site
for both paddlers and bank based users.
