000492
Summary of Water Resources in Northern Mexico .

NIB
. Mexico diverts u.s. deliveries at the NIB into the Alamo canal to irrigate approximately
448,000 acres in the Mexicali Valley (depending upon the hydrology), and supply municipal
and industrial uses in the cities of Mexicali, Tecate, and Tijuana-Rosarito.

Figure 4. The sources of u.S. deliveries at the SIB are the Yuma Main Drain, East Main Canal
Wasteway, West Main Canal Wasteway, and the U.S. 242 Wellfield.

. Mexico routes a fraction of the Colorado River water delivered at the NIB to the south, beneath
the Colorado River, to San Luis, Sonora where it is mixed in the Sanchez Mejorada Canal with
water delivered at the SIB. By routing a fraction of its water delivered at the NIB, Mexico
provides additional water to the San Luis Valley and reduces the salinity of water delivered at
the SIB.

. Approximately 66,000 acres in the San Luis Valley are irrigated by water supplies from the
Sanchez Mejorada Canal, groundwater production from the San Luis Mesa Arenosa wellfield,
and wells located in the valley.

Seven Basin States June 1,2002
