West Main Canal WW <br />IiJ Yuma Main Drain <br /> <br />o <br /> <br />1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 <br />Year <br /> <br />Date source: IBWC (http://www.ibwc.state.govlwad/colorado_river.htm) <br /> <br />Groundwater Production <br />· Groundwater is produced from 489 federally owned and operated wells and 236 privately <br />owned wells (725 total). <br /> <br />· Groundwater is used to augment surface water supplies delivered at the NIB, SIB, and <br />Limitrophe Division. <br /> <br />· Sources of groundwater recharge to the Colorado River aquifer include underflow from the U.S. <br />across the limitrophe and SIB, seepage from the AAC, and recharge resulting from the <br />application of water for irrigation in Mexicali and San Luis Valleys (e.g. seepage from unlined <br />canals, ditches, and drains; over-application of water on irrigated lands). <br /> <br />· During normal years when Mexico is delivered 1,500,000 AF of Colorado River water, the Rio <br />Colorado Irrigation District has up to 727,000 acre feet of groundwater legally available. <br /> <br />· Within the Rio Colorado Irrigation District, approximately 118,800 acres are irrigated <br />exclusively with groundwater extracted from government owned wells. In addition, <br />approximately 57,600 acres are irrigated exclusively with groundwater extracted by private well <br />owners (CNA). <br /> <br />· Estimates of groundwater production vary from 500,000 to 1,000,000 AFY. The magnitude of <br />groundwater production appears to be related to the magnitude of Colorado River water <br />delivered at the international boundary (i.e. high flow years equate to less groundwater <br />production). <br /> <br />Page 7 of 10 <br /> <br />Seven Basin States June 1,2002 <br />
