~~".26 '94 16'31

ccs

TEL 3038745342

P. 3

2. Engineering Assessment
a. Initial Examination

~.~ a site inspection of th~ area in que~tion. Using a hand level get an
Imtial feel for the potential SIze of the basm. Assess if there are problems
with g~~ng water ~n~ or o1!t of the ~rvoir. Engi~r or Engineering
Techmcum make thIS Inspection; depending on travel time cost varies from
$200 - $500 per site.

Contact State Engineer to See if they are aware of any problems with the
site, or if applicable, existing dam. This task typically takes about 2 hours
and the associated cost is about $100. The product is any data the State
Engineer may have on the site. .

Follow up with Forest Service on potential problems.. Sometimes this can
be accomplished by phone call; other times a site visit is required; costs
vary accordingly from about $20 to as much as $500. The product is an
opinion of the likely problems with getting a special use permit.

Engineer also checks again on potential institutional, environment problems.
or special technical problems before deciding whether further consideration
is recommended.

b. Detailed Investigation (only done on options which still look viable after the
initial examination).

Swvey crew does field survey work needed for developing topographic
map. A two person crew does the field work. Tune to complete the field
work varies based on the size and shape of the basin and how visible the
basin is. Typically the time involved varies from 10 - 25 hours and costs
$700 - $1750. The product is field notes on the tOpography of the site.

Next the field notes are reduced and the data used to creat a topographic
map of the existing conditions.' Next a dam or enlarged dam is imposed
. on the existing topo map and the volume of water per foot and the volume
of dirt per foot are calculated. A table of developed of dam height, volume
of dirt. and volume of water showing the cumulative amount of water as
well as the water per foot. From the table. alternatives are developed for
what heights are likely to be most feasible comparing water stored to
earthwork requirements.and potential prob~ems from inundation. Next cost
estimates are prepared for the most viable options and from the cost
estimate. cost per acre foot. The summary table of capacity and dirt
volumes and the cost estimates are presented to the Owner. These tasks'
involve both engineering and engineering technician time. Costs vary based
on the complexity of the site, but typically are about $1000.

(p
