Part II - Project Planning Area

A. Location

The project area is located on Goodman Point approximately 10 miles northwest of Cortez.
The average elevation in the project area is 6,800 feet with several hundred feet of elevation
difference within the project area. Goodman Point is primarily an agricultural area with
crops such as pinto beans, garbanzo beans, wheat, and alfalfa. It is assumed that growth in
the area will continue and new residential areas will be developed on abandoned cropland.

The U.S. Geological Survey map shown in Figure II-I outlines the approximate project
boundaries, while Table II-I gives the legal descriptions of various project features.
A service area map is provided in Figure 11-2.

Project Component
County Road P
County Road N
County Road M
County Road 16
County Road 17
Tank/Pump

Table II-I: Le~al Descriptions
T37N, R17W Section T36N, R17W Section
32,33,34 4
5
7
5, 8
28,33 4,8
4

B. Environmental Resources Present
The location and significance of environmental resources were examined within the
project area. Those that were identified in the Environmental Review include land use,
floodplains, wetlands, cultural resources, biological resources, water quality issues, air
quality, and noise. A brief summary of the environmental resources present, potential
impacts due to the proposed project, and mitigation measures are presented below. For a
comprehensive investigation of the environmental resources, the Environmental Review
should be consulted.

Land Use
Current uses of private property in the Goodman Point project area include residential,
agricultural, and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). Land uses will not be impacted
outside of constmction areas that will occur in tilled fields. The constmction area will be
approximately 30 feet wide in these areas. Pipelines will be buried at a sufficient depth
and will not impact future agricultural operations. Mitigation to these disturbed private
lands will be to landowner's specifications.

Formally classified public lands include the National Park Service Hovenweep National
Monument Goodman Point Outlier and the Bureau of Land Management Canyons of the
Ancients National Monument. Formally classified lands are not included in the proposed
proj ect area.

Goodman Point Water Association - Preliminaty Engineering RepOli

2
