000554

3.1.7 Stocking of sub-catchable, fry or fingerling coldwater species will be
considered where natural reproduction is limited, yet the waters have growth
potential based on natural productivity to sustain fishable populations.

3.1.8 Stocking of catchable-sized trout will be considered for waters that are not
capable of natural reproduction or substantial growth based on natural
productivity or water conditions.

3.2 Warmwater Recreational Fish Manaaement

3.2.1 The Division will provide a diversity of warmwater angling opportunity using a
variety of prey and predator species, most of which are non-native to the State
of Colorado in waters appropriate for such management.

3.2.2 The stocking of warmwater fish species will not compromise the health or
abundance of protected native fish species. Warmwater fish species
populations will be maintained through the use of fry, fingerling and sub-
catchable stocked fish.

3.2.1 Catchable-sized channel catfish may be used to provide recreational fishing
opportunity.

3.3 Role and Use of stocked fish

3.3.1 The Division will consider the use of stocked fish in those management
situations where population augmentation is needed to either support fish
species recovery and conservation, or to provide fishing recreation opportunity
in waters not capable of sustaining natural reproduction or suitable fish growth
due to habitat limitations.

3.3.2 The use of stocked fish will not compromise the health of Colorado's aquatic
resources, nor will the use of stocked fish threaten the status of any population
of native fishes. Decisions on stocking fish where the impacts of the stocking
are unknown will require rigorous analysis of the assumptions used to suggest
stocking, to ensure that faulty assumptions will not lead to damage of the
fishery resource. Fish exposed to pathogens that are determined not to
present a threat to the resource may be used in waters determined annually
by the Division of Wildlife Director.

3.3.3 Division fish managers will request fish species and numbers for stocking
based on individual water management decisions based on this Policy.

11
