OO1l553

3.0 WILDLIFE RELA rED RECREATION

Recreational fishing is a traditional and legitimate use of Colorado's fishery resources.
Waters in Colorado will be managed to continue to provide a diversity of angling
opportunities.

Sportfish management in the future will require close attention to meshing the needs of
anglers with the capability of aquatic habitats to support sportfish populations. The
challenge before the Division is to integrate the need for managed \,Vaters to . provide for a
diversity of recreational fishing opportunity in aquatic systems complicated by non-sport
aquatic species management, decreased coldwater fish production, whirling disease,
diminished aquatic habitats and vocal interest groups.

3.1 Coldwater Recreational Fishery Manaaement

3.1.1 Waters managed for coldwater fishing recreation will take advantage of the
natural productivity of waters and be managed as wild, non-stocked fisheries
wherever possible.

3.1.2 The Division will give preference to the use of native cutthroat trout sub-
species for management purposes. Non-native trout and char species will be
utilized in other waters not suitable for native trout.

3.1.3 The Division will promote the protection and enhancement of aquatic and
terrestrial habitats that perpetuate wild trout populations through cooperation
with appropriate land management agencies.

3.1.4 The Division will seek mitigation for the loss of wild trout waters as a result of
human impacts.

3.1.5 The Division will use special angling regulations as needed to protect and
perpetuate wild trout populations where angling is allowed.

3.1.6 Wild trout waters shall be managed with a specific set of guidelines that serve
to maintain these populations in their wild state. Wild Trout waters will not be
stocked except to restore or establish populations, including recovery and
restoration after natural calamity if natural recovery is unlikely. If restocking
is necessary, the genetic integrity of the wild stocks will not be compromised
through use of fry and fingerlings from wild brood stocks where basin of origin
is considered.

10
