The District currently <br />utilizes . the earlier described Micro-Filtration . system which is rated at 36 gpm <br />, . for an average summer production, and 32 gpm for ap. average winter pro- . <br />duction.. ' . . <br /> <br />The ultimately developed 350 EQR, at 200 gpmlEQR would require a constant <br />, rate of. treatment of, approximate~y 50 gpm. <br /> <br />. Quoting from' the segment in the McLaughllii Water Engineers Planning. <br />Document entitled" Public Health and Regulatory Compliance" ( on page 5 of <br />. Section IV-EVALUATION OF EXISTING WATER TREATMENT FACll..- <br />ITIESof the Document): ' <br /> <br />"It is questionable whether the existing water treatment plant would comply. <br />with current public health regulations if it were required to treat water at <br />production levels aJ:>ove its specified operating range.The District currently' <br />produces approximately 3-5 'gpm of treated water, but needs to supply 50 gpin <br />as discuSsed in Section ill.Thus, the likelihood of maintaining satisfactory wa- <br />ter quality in the fu~e without investing in a water treatment plant with ex- <br />panded capacity is low----All of the alternate solutions considered in this Plan- <br />ning Document will. strengthen the Distrj,et's water treatment. facilities, thereby <br />ensuring that public health standards will continue to .be met in the future." <br /> <br />Another primary purpose .of the project is to provide a reliable alternate <br />source .of raw water whenever the Little Thompson . River runs dry from . <br />severe drought conditions, or may .otherwise be temporarily rendered unusa- <br />ble from being contaminated for whatever the reason. This 1a~r scenario has <br />recently been 'demonstrated when residue from the major fJIes in Big Elk <br />Meadows found its way into the Little Thompson River, contaminating the <br />flow, and blocking the District's infiltration gallery beneath the River which <br />conveys water to the treatment plant <br /> <br />8 <br />
