\

- 11 -

~

.

. Engage the Douglas County Chambers of Commerce and economic
development councils (Parker, Highlands Ranch, Castle Rock and Lone Tree
Chambers of Commerce; Southeast Business Partnership, Parker and Castle
Rock Economic Development Councils) to assist with business support of
Xeriscape campaign. Recent graduates of leadership programs such as The
Colorado Foundation For Water Education's Water Leaders Class,
Leadership Douglas County, the Colorado Institute for Leadership Training,
and the Bighom Institute for Public Policy, may be invited to assist in these '
retail relations. These groups are currently being solicited for their help.
. The DVD will hit homes mid-March. This is the time when citizens are pre-
planning large projects, and we want water wise and Xeric approaches to be
included in their plans. It is best to inject these ideas earty. The best time to
interface with the retailers and landscape contractors is a few weeks later in
earty April when citizens begin to go to the stores to ask questions and make
more concrete plans. (If an effort is initiated in mid-May after the first frost, the
planning window will have been missed cleanly.) Landscape contractors and
gardens centers, who spend their own money on such efforts, plan their
advertising campaigns to begin in mid-March. By April they are done. That is
the timing that has worked in this market.

.

10. Water Provider and Conservation Oraanization Relations
. The public education for this campaign will be done in partnership with all
Douglas County Water Providers.
. Douglas County will leverage relationships formed with water groups around
the state participating in the precipitation and landscaping study recently
completed under another CWCB grant. Participants in that study included
Douglas County, Castle Pines North, Dominion, rural users in NW Douglas
County, Denver Water, City of Boulder, Northern Colorado Water
Conservancy District, Colorado River Water Conservation District, Colorado
Springs Utilities, the State Engineer's Office, and the Water Quality Control
DMsion of the State Health Department.
. DVD will be mailed to water conservancy districts around the state, and
conservation organizations including Audubon Society, The Nature
Conservancy, Trout Unlimited, Colorado Environmental Coalition, the Upper
Gunnison Water Conservancy District, the Three Rivers Resort in Almont,
CO, the Greenway Foundation, and the Colorado Watershed Alliance.
. This effort is ongoing. The mailings will occur in conjunction with receipt of the
DVDs from the duplication effort in mid to late March.

.

11. Advertising
. Douglas County will approach Colorado Community Newspapers to solicit
their assistance with a special advertising section dedicated to Xeriscaping.
This section can highlight the Xeriscaping effort, and include articles
supporting such efforts. Appropriate retailers will be interested in advertising
related items sold in their stores. Funds requested in the grant application for
