I

1

I

I

1

..

'I

GENERAL INFORMA TION

SCOPE OF WORK:

-I

-I

The Town of Castle Rock (Town) proposes to use grant monies to further evaluate water use
in streetscapes as well as commercial accounts. As the Town continues to grow and water
demand and the value of water increases, it is essential to do a thorough evaluation of how
water is being used in these settings. Grant monies requested would be used primarily to audit
water usage for the top ten commercial accounts and the top ten irrigation accounts, and to aid
in staff time to complete the plan. Commercial and streetscape accounts serve as a significant
portion of our water usage. See Appendix A (or Consumption by User Categories.

-I

I

The existing Water Conservation Plan, written in 1996, states that there were no existing
measures for industrial/commercial water usage. It also outlines the need to analyze current
commercial accounts, identify potential applicable processes, and assess whether such strategies
are feasible in Castle Rock. As more and more water is being used in a commercial setting,
further analysis is required in order to obtain increased understanding of how the water is
being used, and set conservation goals for this type of water usage.

I

I

Commercial accounts would be evaluated on the following criteria:
. Water usage and trends
· Impact to peak demand
. Suggestions for implementation of qualification criteria and cooperatives that would give
agencies a water-wise designation if they completed certain conservation strategies

1

1

More than 50% of the Town's water supply is used on landscapes. This factor not only results
in contributing to challenges to meet peak water demands, but also accounts for an extremely
large portion of the Town's water use. Even though several programs are in place that require
streetscapes to be planned with water-wise strategies, many streetscape irrigation accounts do
not use water efficiently. An audit performed last season (2004) verifies this, i.e. one
streetscape used 76 inches of water as opposed to the 30 inches required for Kentucky
bluegrass to thrive.

1

I

I
I

It is very important that the Town look at streetscapes closer as it is apparent there are many
ways to save water on streetscapes and other outdoor watering. Further evaluation of this
type of account is needed to set realistic conservation goals.

,I

CWCS Water Conservation Planning Grant Program

SA VING WA TER THROUGH EDveA nON, INCENTIVES, AND APPLlCA TlON OF BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
