03-01-1993 04:23PM FROM SOLAR TECHNOLOGY INST.

TO

9205198

P.10

.

e

e

governments participating in the effort will not be required
to contribute cash but instead only in-kind serviees. This
,.is vary important and innovative as we ente~ tha Amendment 1
era of government expenditures.

Requiring a match from the participants will also give ~hem a
..,feeling of o~ership in the project. We required this match
with the 1992 project for Carbondale/Glenwood Springs project
without complaint. Each participant realized that they were
getting a sUbstantial savings compared to what they would
have to pay on the retail market. In addition, they qot free
inst&llationr confidence that the water saving devices are of
high quality and a loca1 place to call if they have any
problems.

We realized by implementing the pilot project in Carbondale
that there are additional unexpected benefits that come along
wi~h the process. Por example, when installing the
showerhead we notice the hot water temperature is over 150
degrees and we can realize significant savings by reducing
the setting between 120 and 130 degrees. We can also
~ecommend insulation on their hot water heater tanks and
pipes. Project participants usually have other question.
about how to save energy and reduce their utility bills.
This leads to public education regarding the conservation of
natural resources and the importance of using them more
efficiently in the future.

SHARING RESULTS OF PROJECT

To begin,' the RFEC and Roaring Fork Forum members will use
the local radio stations and news'papers to help distribute
the ongoing progress of the project and the monitored water
and energy savings.

With over 20rOOO citizens living at the head waters of the
Roaring Fork and Crystal Rivers, residents will become even
more aware of the importance of water conservation. Public
Service Announcemen~8 via the ~edia will convey to local.
the results of this project.

The Roaring Fork Forum members will share the results with
other ruralr mountainous resort communities_ Projec~ resul~s
will be conveyed to local Council of Governments and other
communities may pattern future water saving efforts after
,this project.
