Submitted to: State Office of Water Conservation
Submitted by: Jean Loose and Charles Johnson

Infrared Automatic Faucets

QUESTION 1 Detailed summary description of the proposed
project.

The Grand Junction Regional Center (GJRC) requests
funding for the purchase of infrared automatic faucets to be used
in agency buildings that require staff members to wash hands
frequently. Recently, the GJRC conducted a water usage study.
The results suggested that the agency would save 87.5 % of our
current water use for hand washing if automatic faucets were
installed. During handwashing water runs continuously until
after hands are dried with a paper towel, about 45 seconds.

Infrared automatic faucets are sensor operated and make
the lavatory "hands free". They sense the user's presence and
immediately turn on the water supply that has been pre-mixed to
desired temperature. When hands are removed from the invisible
beam of light, the water supply turns off. For hand washing
these faucets run for 10 seconds as water does not need to run
during the whole hand wash procedure.

GJRC currently has 263 clients with 281 staff who work
directly with clients. A number of others including therapists and
assistants have daily contact with clients. GJRC has eleven
dorms on campus and ten group homes throughout the
community. Ninety percent of clients at the agency function at a
two year mental age or less. Staff assistance with bathing,
shaving, haircare, dressing, tooth brushing and feeding is
necessary. One Hundred and twenty-four of the clients wear
attends (adult diapers).

Page 1
