Question 3
Where did we get the idea for the project
The Town of Lyons is submitting this grant proposal together with the Boulder Energy
Conservation Center (BECC).
The BECC is a community non-profit organization committed to assisting Boulder county
communities in conserving resources. BECC has partnered with groups in Boulder and
Longmont previously to install xeriscape demonstration gardens. BECC views this grant
as an opportunity to sow seeds of education that flower into community support for
xenscape.
BECC learned about the Water Conservation & Water Use efficiency Block Grant
Program and teamed with the Town of Lyons to help them realize their very first xeriscape
project. The Town is enthusiastic about the idea and ready to learn more about this "new"
way to conserve water.

In developing this project BECC statftalked to the Town's Parks and Recreation Board
first to find out ifaxeriscaped garden is something they would be interested in. The board
immediately felt that a demonstration xeric garden would benefit the community. The
board contacted the Lyons elementary school to discuss their participation. The school's
principal and teachers feel that the garden will not only beautifY the school's environment,
.. but will also provide a learning experience for the students and the Lyons community.
Should the grant be awarded to the Town, the school's teachers are looking forward to
develop a lesson plan, tailored to the Lyons mountain setting, and engage their students in
the planting and maintaining of the garden.

Question 4
Community involvement
This project intends to involve as many members of the community as possible. Students
and their parents will be directly involved in planting and maintaining the garden. The
town wants to incorporate the garden in the annual arbor day celebrations. Town residents
will learn about the project and be updated on it regularly through the local newspaper.
The Parks and Recreation board will encourage youth groups to participate in the project.
The demonstration garden will be located in a conspicuous place so it can be enjoyed by
town residents every day.

Question 5
Sharing results
As mentioned previously it is in the town's interest that the results of the project be shared
with residents to educate them about the benefits of xeriscaping. The project will
demonstrate that water wise gardening will conserve water and lower utility bills.
The school teachers, who will develop the lesson program, feel that the program may also
be introduced in other St. Vrian or front range schools. They will be happy to share their
materials and experiences with others.

11/21/96

4
