Question 6
Innovation
In the Town of Lyons there are no public landscapes that are xeriscaped. A water wise
demonstration garden will bring something new and unique to the town. This project is
also different because it is integrated in its approach: a lesson plan for students,
informational materials and newspaper articles will guide Lyons residents while the garden
is taking shape.

Benefits for agency
Lyons residents receive their water from the town of Lyons. The municipal water
treatment plant and the sewer system are a constant concern to the town. To lower water
treatment costs the town is looking at ways to conserve water and use it more efficiently.
Especially now that the town is welcoming new residents at a rapid pace, water wise
gardens will help the town in its efforts.

Benefits to others
Residents may be inspired to xeriscape their own yards. The benefit to them is that they
then create a potential to cut their water bill and conserve water.
The Lyons demonstration xeric garden project will inspire and inform residents of the
town. The project may serve as an example to other small communities in Colorado. The
lesson program, informational materials and an evaluation report will be available to those
communities.

Question 7
Agencies and organizations that will be involved in the project
Participants in the Lyons xeric demonstration garden will be:

Town of Lyons
432 Fifth Avenue
Lyons, CO 80540

contact person: Kurt Carlson
(Director Parks and Recreation Dept)
phone: 823-6622

Lyons Elementary School
338 High Street
Lyons, CO 80540

contact person: Allen Dein
(Principal)
phone: 823-6915

Boulder Energy Conservation Center
11702 Walnut Street
Boulder, CO 80302

contact person: Detty Versteege
(project Manager)
phone: 441-3278

11/21/96

5
