public education
At present there are no xeriscaped landscapes within the Town of Lyons. A xeric
demonstration garden will not only offer a learning experience to elementary school
students but also to Lyons residents. The parents of the students will almost automatically
be involved in the project and learn about the benefits of water wise gardening. Lyons
residents will be invited to help with the project, and once the garden is installed everyone
can enjoy the garden, since it will be located'in a higWy visible location, During the
installation of the garden all Lyons residents will learn about the project and xeriscaping in
general through articles in the local newspaper. These articles and other informational
materials will point out how xeriscapes contribute to water conservation and how that will
result in lower water bills.

Question 2
Monitoring
The xeriscaped demonstration garden will be installed in an area that is currently nothing
more than red dirt and weeds. Elementary school students will monitor water use and
other features in their garden and report the results to the local newspaper.

Evaluation
The objectives of the project are
1. to educate Lyons residents on the concepts of xeriscaping
2. teach Lyons elementary school students the value of xeriscaping for the semi arid
climate that they live in.
objective 1: Lyons residents who are inspired by the demonstration garden, or who
learned about xeriscaping through the information that was provided through news paper
articles and brochures that will be available at the library, town hall and elementary school,
are encouraged to contact the Boulder Energy Conservation Center. The BECC will keep
track of inquiries that they receive on xeriscaping from Lyons residents. Also, the number
of brochures that people take will provide an indication of their interest.
objective 2: Lyons elementary school students will be involved during the entire project.
In class they will be taught about the concepts of xeriscape. and the benefits of using native
and drought tolerant plants for the environment. They will plant the garden and maintain it
once it is installed. The program will be designed such that the children can take
ownership of the garden and proudly show it of to their parents and other visitors to the
school.

Publicize project and project results
To the Town of Lyons xeriscaping is a relatively new concept. This project aims to
familiarize present and future Lyons residents with the concept of xeriscaping and show
them how beautiful and colorful water wise gardens can be. Informing local residents
about the project before, during and after the garden will be put in is an important
component of this project. The local newspaper will be involved, articles on xeriscaping
will be submitted, data on the garden's water use will be published, and brochures on
xeriscaping and the design of the garden will be available through various outlets in the
town.

11/21/96

3
