GRANT APPLICA. TION - PART 2
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project that we propose would fall under the following categories:
* School Education * Public Open Space
* Public Info/Education * System Infrastructure
* Landscaping * GovemmentlPublic

Questions 1-8

Question 1
Project description
The Town of Lyons is a small community in North Boulder County with about 1500
inhabitants. The town expects to grow, and to control the growing demand for potable
water the town is looking at ways to promote water conservation and efficient water use.
To aid in this effort the town proposes to design and install a xeriscaped demonstration
garden near the Lyons elementary school. A visible location near the elementary school
ensures that many of the town's residents willleam about the project and the benefits of
water wise gardening. The project will be integrated in the Lyons elementary school
environmental studies program.

School project
The Lyons Elementary School principal and teachers welcome a xeric demonstration
garden near their school. Especially, because this garden will complement the
comprehensive environmental studies program that the school offers to its students.
The garden will offer the students an opportunity to gain hands on experience and see how
. plants can flourish with little water. To accompany the installation of the garden, teachers
will develop a lesson plan that introduces students to xeriscaping and the value of native
and drought tolerant plants for the semi-arid environment that they live in.
Once the garden is installed the students will maintain and monitor it. Regularly they will
provide the local newspaper with updated reports on their garden.

11/21/96

2
