It
is establishing a blue-ribbon task force which will develop
proposals for new ways in which the united states can cooperate
with other nations to address global environmental problems.

staff Contacts: Gareth Porter and Derek Denniston.

Enerqy: The objective of this program is to focus greater
attention on energy policy i:;;sues and the role of energy
efficiency and renewables in meeting domestic environmental,
energy security and competitiveness challenges, as well as
reducing global warming. Congressional briefings and workshops
are featured.

EESI's Board of Directors has issued a consensus report
calling on congress and President Bush to adopt specific
recommendations to capture the potential of energy efficiency
and renewables for meeting these multiple challenges. Broad-
based work groups have been organized to refine and advance the
recommendations.

staff Contact: Carol Werner.

Acid Rain: This proj ect has issued a report on energy
efficiency as a major cost-cutting strategy for reducing acid
deposition. A work group of Congressional staff and efficiency
experts is refining efficiency options and providing input into
legislative deliberations.

staff Contact: Carol Werner.

Global Climate Chanae: Linked to both the energy and
international programs, this initiative sponsors educational
activities for Congress on the science of climate change and
possible policy responses. It also works to identify and
advance near-term policy options (many of which are included in
the Board of Directors' energy report) and to facilitate
Congressional action to advance international discussions on
strategies to prevent climate change. The Institute works with
the Congressional Climate study Group on this initiative.

staff Contacts: Carol Werner and Gareth Porter.

Water Efficiencv: Launched in the summer of 1989, this
initiative is carrying out educational and analytical
activities aimed at raising water efficiency opportunities on
the national policy agenda and exploring options for capturing
those opportunities.
