EESI has published a report <br />on steps needed to promote hazardous waste reduction and <br />alternative waste treatment based on an 18-month investigation <br />and a Midwestern case study, with guidance from a blue-ribbon <br />advisory panel made up of environmentalists, industry <br />executives, congressional leaders and federal and state <br />officials. congressional briefings complement the policy <br />proposals. <br /> <br />The Institute launched a new project in the summer <br />to begin a "dialogue" among all major interests <br />implementation of the "Superfund" clean-up program. <br /> <br />of 1989 <br />on the <br /> <br />Solid waste is an issue. that was catapulted on the <br />Congressional agenda in 1988 by the odyssey of the "garbage <br />barge" and the landfill shortage crisis. To help 'congress <br />"catch up," the Institute has carried out a series of briefings <br />and field trips for Members and staff to provide objective <br />information on the problem, clarify the issues and advance the <br />debate on possible solutions. A Congressional staff work group <br />has been organized to evaluate policy options. <br /> <br />EESI has published a solid waste policy issues report and <br />a legislative update. <br /> <br />Staff Contact: Michael witt <br /> <br />International Cooperation for the Environment: This <br />program has carried out an aggressive educational campaign to <br />elevate developing country resource management problems -- and <br />their national security and economic implications for the <br />United States -- on the congressionai agenda. A blue-ribbon <br />task force set up by EESI produced a series of policy <br />recommendations aimed at helping developing countries "help <br />themselves" manage their natural resources for sustainable <br />development. These recommendations have been incorporated into <br />U.S. development assistance legislation and programs. <br />
