Its reputation for <br />timely, unbiased and authoritative legislative information and <br />research has made the Conference the largest of all <br />Congressional caucuses and an indispensable resource for <br />policymakers on and off Capitol Hill. The Conference's Co- <br />Chairs are Congressman Robert E. Wise, Jr. (D-W. Va. ) and <br />Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) Vice Chairs Are Congresswomen <br />Jan Meyers (R-Kans.) and Senator Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.). <br /> <br />INSTITUTE PRIORITIES <br /> <br />Groundwater Protection: This program is aimed at <br />strengthening federal policies and programs. to prevent <br />groundwater contamination. A special interest is in filling <br />the gaps in rural groundwater protection. <br /> <br />The Institute has produced a Congressional agenda for <br />groundwater protection based on a series of conferences and <br />workshops chaired by Members of Congress ,around the country. <br />It contains recommendations for federal research,' technical <br />assistance, technology transfer and comprehensive federal-state <br />prevention programs, many of which have been incorporated into <br />pending legislation. In addition, the program carries out <br />educational and policy development activities with Members of <br />congress, staff and other key policymakers. <br /> <br />Staff Contact: Don Gray <br /> <br />Aqriculture: Recently, it has become clear that federal <br />farm policies and programs, and the intensive agricultural <br />chemical use they engender, are an. important part of the <br />groundwater protection problem in rural areas.
